Moon Bagels and Total Lunar Eclipse

Last week there was a total lunar eclipse that looked like this:

my camera definitely did not take this

In honor of the moon, we had an epic baking session and made…MOON BAGELS (which are just regular bagels with an awesome name!)

all in a row...

Ingredients:

1 tbsp yeast

1 cup warm water

1 tsp salt

3 tbsp sugar

3 cups flour

First combine the yeast, sugar, and salt with warm water until it’s all foamy. Add the flour until a kneadable dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured board until it’s smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl and let it rise until doubled. You can also add in some delicious peppers and onions before letting it rise if you would so desire.

Punch it down and separate it out into 12 pieces that you roll into balls.

Work a 1/2 inch hole into the center of the ball and then let them rise an additional 20 minutes.

Place two or three at a time into a large pot of boiling water with 1 tbsp sugar dissolved inside. Let them rise up and get all shiny and then flip them. this takes like 5 or 10 minutes. They’ll also get pretty fat.

Remove them and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet until they get brown on the top and bottom.

You can also sprinkle with salt, onion, seeds, and/or garlic before or after baking. We threw in hot peppers and onions…aahhh

mmmmmmm butterSmear with cream cheese (if you’re in AMERICALAND) or vache qui rit (if you’re in AFRICALAND) and enjoy. Preferably while watching awesome lunar eclipses that are only available to those of us outside the US. WHATUP.

Here’s my lunar eclipse photo, taken toward the very end of the night while the lightened sliver started to show back through. PENUMBRA for the win.
